An Apple a Day… 

In 1942, Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue. And guess what he brought with him? Vinegar! — Barrels of Apple Cider Vinegar for the prevention of scurvy! Ditto for the soldiers in the American Civil War! And again by the feared Samurai warriors, for its strength and power!

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has been used for thousands of years for its unique health benefits and it’s ability to remove bacteria, germs, and odors.

The use of Apple Cider Vinegar is the number one recommended food to help maintain the body’s vital acid-alkaline balance, according to Gabriel Cousins, M.D., author of Conscious Eating and Spiritual Nutrition. While ACV is acidic (like a lemon), it creates a perfect alkaline environment once it is in your body, which is the exact opposite of what most diseases require to thrive.

The Wonders of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is made from apple juice which is fermented into hard apple cider, and then fermented a second time to become apple cider vinegar (ACV). There are so many useful ways to incorporate ACV into your daily routine. It’s effective in your house, for your skin, your hair, and even your pets.

As often as I can, I use apple cider vinegar and/or vodka for an instant decrease in the use of unnatural chemicals. Perhaps they’ll become your obsession too.

Here are Two Quick Tips:

Tip # 1: To rapidly replenish electrolytes, put a pinch of Himalayan salt and a teaspoon or so of raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of purified water, and drink.

Tip # 2: To reduce or remove stiffness from the joints and body, and reduce overall inflammation, mix one teaspoon of ACV(if you can tolerate the stronger taste then increase dosage up to one tablespoon) and one teaspoon of raw honey. Take this 2 -3 times a day.

Spoiler Alert — While it’s a great electrolyte-replacer, ph-balancer, and overall amazing elixir, some people find that it doesn’t taste very good on its own, so I’ve included some tastier ways to drink it at the end underTasty Ways to get your daily dose of ACV Without Gagging!

All Vinegar is not Created Equal

The Beneficial Nutrients in Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, that is unfiltered, unheated, unpasteurized include:

  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Vitamins A, C, B6, and E
  • Thiamin
  • Riboflavin
  • Niacin
  • Pantothenic Acid
  • Beta-carotene
  • Lycopene
  • Probiotics
  • Enzymes
  • Pectin – this helps regulate blood pressure and cholesterol.

When the acetic acid bacteria and a type of cellulose develop during the fermentation process, Mycoderma Aceti is created. This is known as the “Mother”. And it’s what makes ACV the amazing elixir that it is. It is why the vinegar will be murky and cloudy, with cobweb-like strings. Some say that ALL the benefits of ACV are due completely to the “Mother”. But no one really knows for sure …

There are other apple cider vinegars available that are clear instead of cloudy. But these do not contain the “Mother” and, therefore, do not have the health-promoting benefits of true apple cider vinegar. So steer clear from these varieties and pick only organic, raw, unfiltered, and unprocessed, which will be cloudy. This  is the one I use.

How to Add Apple Cider Vinegar to Your Daily Routine

The uses for raw, unfiltered ACV are virtually endless.

Here are some of the best ones I’ve found :

Skin and Personal Health Care

Facial Toner

Dilute ACV with water, and apply to skin with a cotton ball for a simple facial toner. (I prefer undiluted, but check with your skin first).

Detoxifying Facial Mask

  • Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and bentonite clay.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of raw honey.
  • Apply to your face and leave on for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
  • Moisturize lightly with some coconut oil.
  • Do this once a week.

Plagued with Pimples?

Take ACV orally and apply topically to help keep skin clean and bacteria-free. Here are three different remedies to help calm the skin and maintain a healthy pH.

Hair Rinse (for soft and shiny hair)

Take an old shampoo bottle, fill it with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water. Pour this on your hair after shampooing 2-3 times per week to remove build-up and residue and restore shine. 

Sunburned Skin

Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath, and soak for 10 minutes to help alleviate sunburn discomfort.

Or —

Soak a clean cloth in undiluted apple cider vinegar and apply to the sunburned area helps to soothe your skin and help to heal the burn.

Itchy Skin

Soak a cotton ball with undiluted ACV, or equal parts ACV and water if your skin is more sensitive, and apply to the itchy area to help reduce the itch and inflammation.

Candida / Yeast

Remove sugar from your diet and add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of water, and drink three times a day to help kill off the candida (yeast).


Dab a bit of apple cider vinegar under your arms. It does have a strong odor but this will do the trick to eliminate bacteria-causing odor and keep it at bay.

Athletes Foot

To eliminate this fungal infection, pour some ACV in a spray bottle and spray on dry feet.

Or —

Make a foot bath with 1/2 cup of ACV, 2 tablespoons of Himalayan salt, and some warm water.

Pat dry and moisturize lightly with some coconut oil.

Then use a sprinkle of corn starch before putting on socks to help absorb any excess moisture.

Hangover Helper

ACV will help bring the body’s pH back in balance while replenishing depleted minerals, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and sodium. Mix 2 tablespoons of ACV with 1 cup of filtered water and drink. Do this three times throughout the day for a quicker recovery.


Soak a cotton ball and place lightly in your nostril to help constrict blood vessels and slow down bleeding. Lean forward and press nostrils together for 10 minutes.

Sore Throat

Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water, and use it to gargle. Some say to swallow it after, but considering the ACV has been swishing around with bacteria and/or a virus, I prefer to just spit it out.

Muscle Cramps

If your have muscles cramps, you may be low on potassium or magnesium. Mix 2 tablespoons of ACV with 1 cup of water, and drink three times a day to help relieve cramps.

Acid Reflux & Heartburn

Often the cause or acid reflux is an imbalanced stomach pH and a lack of sufficient probiotics and enzymes. ACV will provide these. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water and drink it five minutes before meals to avoid this trouble.

Ear Infection

With an ear syringe (found at the drug store), squirt an equal solution of ACV and water or a solution of 1/3 ACV, 1/3 water, and 1/3 alcohol (I prefer vodka), and let sit in the ear for 1-2 minutes, then drain and repeat in the other ear. Of course, see a doctor if the problem persists.

Cuts and Burns

Soak a cotton ball with ACV and place on the cut. Repeat throughout the day to speed healing.

Mosquito Bites

Mix equal parts ACV and water and apply to the bite with a cotton pad. Repeat as needed to reduce pain and swelling.

Jellyfish Stings

DO NOT wash a jellyfish sting with water. Wash immediately with apple cider vinegar. If the stinger comes in contact with fresh water, the jellyfish tentacles will swell and become much more difficult to remove. 

Repel Fleas on Your Pets

Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, and spray to the solution on your pets fur and rub generously into the skin. Completely saturate the entire coat, avoiding the eyes. Repeat every day for week, and watch the fleas flee.

Around The House

Unclog Drains

Instead of using commercial drain cleaners with irritating chemicals, try this:

  • Take a funnel and pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain.
  • Then follow it with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar.
  • Let it foam.
  • When the foaming stops, flush the drain with hot water and wait about 5 minutes.
  • Then flush the drain with cold water.
  • If you have a particularly slow drain, follow with 1/2 cup of salt and follow it with 2 cups of boiling ACV.
  • Then flush with hot water and again by cold water.
  • Do this monthly for smooth running drains.

Natural Bathroom Cleaner

Pour apple cider Vinegar into the toilet, and let it sit overnight.

Natural Kitchen & Household Cleaner

Fill a spray bottle with equal parts ACV and water, and spray to clean and disinfect counter surfaces, windows, glasses, and mirrors with this antibacterial solution.

This solution cleans eyeglasses too.

Fruit Flies Be-Gone

Pour some ACV into a container with holes and watch the fruit flies disappear.

Refrigerator Odor Remover

First, fill a spray bottle with equal parts ACV and water, and use to wipe down the fridge.

Then place a small, shallow cup of ACV in the fridge to continue to keep the fridge fresh. Repeat monthly.

Extend the Life of Cut Flowers

Mix 2 teaspoons of ACV with 2 teaspoons of sugar and add it to your flower water.

Change twice a week to keep your flowers looking perky.

Weed Wacker

To avoid the harsh chemicals in commercial weed killers, spray undiluted ACV directly onto weeds to gently eliminate them.

Jewelry Cleaner

For sparkling clean jewels, soak your gold jewelry in a cup of ACV for twenty minutes, rinse with water, and dry with a clean cloth.

Just so you know

Apple cider vinegar is very acidic.

If youre taking it internally, always dilute it with water or juice before swallowing.

There are no official guidelines for taking ACV internally — the most common usage is to take up to three teaspoons a day with water or juice about 20-30 minutes before eating a meal or first thing in the morning. Or try it after your Bikram class.

Tasty ways to get your daily dose of ACV (without gagging!)

 Here are some taste-bud friendly ACV drinks that you may like to try:

 Sweetened Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Elixir 

  • 1 1/2 cups of cold filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of apple or grape juice (juice your own if you like)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of powdered stevia or a few drops of liquid stevia*

Place all the ingredients in a glass jar and stir until well mixed. Add some ice if you like, and drink!

(*I prefer raw honey to stevia, and it works just as well.)
